- In 1913, Richard H. Edmonds (from the First Baptist Church) suggested to
Joshua Levering (from Eutaw Place Church) that a new Baptist church
should be erected in the neighborhood of the new Johns Hopkins Homewood
campus.

- Originally planned to be built in the Roland Park- Guilford area,
University Baptist Church ended up being built on a plot on N. Charles
and St. Paul, where it is today.

- John Russell Pope designed the new church building. (His plans for the
main sanctuary won first prize at a Paris exhibition).
- He also designed the Jefferson Memorial, the West Building of the
National Gallery of Art, and the Baltimore Museum of Art.

- Before the building we now know as UBC today was built, people met in
what was called: “the shack” or the “pre-fab”.

- 1920: Construction on the main building began.
- The first pastor was Dr. Dixon, who ended up marrying a lady who was
from the Cadbury family, the same Cadburys that make candy.
- In 1925, Dr. Dixon passed away.

- Although thirty-two years old, he was referred to as “old Dr. Jones” due
to the sound of his voice on the radio.
- 1929: First summer Vacation Bible School was held. 68 teachers and
students attended, with five conversions. Nursery is started.
- 1932: Dr. Jones resigned to become a missionary to the Philippines.

- 1934: 90 members joined UBC due to the closing of the McCormick Memorial
Church and Dr. Fraser became pastor.
- 1939: Renovations began on the lower auditorium.

- Before the US entered WWII, 71 members of UBC had already reported for
service.
- To help with the war effort, the ladies of the church sewed for the Red
Cross.
- 1942: Dr. Fraser announced his resignation in a year, leaving the church
with a “lame-duck” pastor.

- 1943: The church called Dr. Bryant to be pastor.
- 1944: UBC became the sponsor of Baynesville Baptist Church (now Loch
Raven Baptist Church).

- 1946: Dr. Richardson is called as pastor and moved into the newly
purchased parsonage at 210 Witherspoon Road.
- During this same year, a professional quartet is added and Children’s
Church is started.
- UBC raised over $3000 for world relief from the war (over $30,000 in
today’s money).
- The late 40’s and early 50’s were “the buoyant years,” in that UBC saw
budget surpluses and record attendances.

- Dr. Vernon Richardson

- Dr. Richardson continued his faithful service at UBC during the 1950s.
- Due to his popularity as a pastor and a leader, people flocked to the
church to hear him preach.
- The increased accessibility brought by cars increased his popularity, as
people drove to church.

- Dr. Richardson suffered a mild heart attack in 1963, which curtailed his
activities.
- He left UBC in 1964 after 18.5 years of service to accept the pastorate
of River Road Baptist Church in Richmond, VA.

- Dr. Downing was called to become pastor in 1965.
- He took to the pulpit under the shadow of his predecessor, Dr.
Richardson.
- Nevertheless, he was an effective pastor and a servant of the church
during a period of change and transformation.

- In 1977 he accepted the pastorate of University Baptist Church in Chapel
Hill, NC.

- Dr. Giles took to the pulpit in 1978.
- He was renowned for his pastoral ability and his compassion for members
of the church.

- Dr. Giles challenged the church to emphasize mission work, and as a
result, the church created a Mission Trust that funds Baptist missions
and missionaries.
- Dr. Giles retired in 1990.

- Dr. David Albert Farmer, Pastor
|

- The church called Dr. David Albert Farmer as its new pastor.
- Dr. Farmer came to University Baptist from the St. Charles Baptist
Church in New Orleans, Louisiana.

- In 1992, University Baptist celebrated its 75th anniversary.
- The church celebrated with various events throughout the year.

- In the late 1990s, the church building underwent a major restoration.
- It was completed in two phases: exterior and interior.

- Limestone blocks were repointed, the tile roof was replaced, and
interior cracking and leak damage was repaired.

- A decorative metal piece was added to the top of the cupola.
- The piece was designed after sketches found in the original building
plans.

- Dr. Farmer left University Baptist in 2000 to take a full-time position
as editor of Pulpit Digest.

- In 2001, Dr. Lamar King was called to pastor University Baptist Church.
- Dr. King focused on church growth and revitalization.

- The church developed a strategic plan.
- In 2003, The Reverend Jamie Sipsma was called as the Associate Pastor of
College Ministry.
- Jamie started The Gathering, a contemporary worship service.

- In 2004, The Reverend Marty Anderson was called as Associate Pastor of
Education and Outreach.
- The Reverend Robin Bolen Anderson was called as Associate Pastor of
Congregational Life.

- University Baptist Church’s congregation experienced increased energy
and momentum.
- Friends and members participated in various fellowship opportunities.
|

- In early 2006, Jamie and his wife Heather relocated to Connecticut where
Heather could further her graduate studies.
- In March, Dr. King retired. His
enthusiasm and commitment to church growth will be remembered.

- University Baptist Church has a rich history of missions and outreach.
- The church has sponsored and participated in global missions as well as
local outreach through the WMU, the college ministry, and other
congregational groups.
