Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

The Churches of Charles are excited to once again join together for a day of serving our community! On Monday, January 18 2021, we have some wonderful opportunities to be mindful of our neighbors and some of the needs in our city. Read below for a description of events, which have been created uniquely for our season of pandemic and the need to remain socially distant.

Clean Up Your Neighborhood

Take a walk with a purpose: cleaning up trash in your neighborhood.  Many of us have taken to walking to get out, exercise and get some fresh air.  Why not combine your walk with a little clean up? Stop by the UBC parking lot from 9-10am to pick up a trash picker, safety vest and some garbage bags, maybe an extra mask, and go home to walk your neighborhood.  Encourage your family to join you or a neighbor or two to tackle a socially distanced stretch of the street or alley.  Return the picker and the vest to the UBC parking lot from 3-4 and let us know how many bags of trash you collected. Put the bags out with your regular trash.  That was easy and don’t you feel better?

 Bake Casseroles

The next casserole drop off at 2nd Presbyterian is February 5th from noon-2pm.  Get a head start by making and freezing one (or more) today while you have some time.  Casseroles should be in disposable 13x9 pans, tightly wrapped in foil and labeled with the type of casserole.  Make a family favorite or try something new. While you are at it, make one for yourself and enjoy not having to cook a few times this week.

 Write a Note of Encouragement

During the pandemic, prisoners are not only facing isolation but raging COVID rates. Please write some letters to the St Dysmas Christian community. Just write a generic letter without any information that could be used to locate or identify you. No cards – just plain or lined white paper and use only black or blue ink. Simple drawings are okay, but no stickers. You can offer a Bible verse or prayer or some other kind of encouragement and sign with your first name only. Mail letters to Community of St. Dysmas, 905 Frederick Rd., Catonsville, MD 21228. You can put multiple letters in an envelope.  More than three sheets will require extra postage.

 Discuss a Movie

Watch the movie, Selma, sometime prior to MLK Day and then join a Zoom meeting from 7-8 pm to discuss it.  To participate in the discussion, please register below.  A link with the Zoom invitation will be sent out to all who registered before the meeting.
